That Morning Cup of Joe
It is amazing how many raw foodies still drink coffee. Not that we are on some moral kick of what's right and what's wrong, but we just want to acknowledge how funny it is to avoid eating steamed vegetables because they aren't raw and then drink coffee on the side!
It's all good though, because our Wellness Editor, Neel Patel, has compiled a nice list of some of the effects that, that 'Morning Cup of Joe' (caffeine) has on the body.
Caffeine is one of the most abused substances in America. It is a direct stimulant of the central nervous system. It is found in many different drinks and foods such as chocolate, coffee and soda to name a few. Some of the side effects of consuming excess caffeine in the body include an increase in frequency of urination, insomnia, reduced fine-motor skills/coordination. A major side effect that many people may not know about is that caffeine has been found to increase the excretion of calcium in the urine! So there is no surprise that drinking an excessive amount of caffeine can lead to calcium depletion leading to deterioration in bone density and overall strength. Caffeine increases blood pressure by causing constriction of the blood vessels. Caffeine is also found to increase the secretion of gastrin, a hormone that increases acid production in the stomach. And as many of you may know, ulcers are agitated in an acidic environment.
The long term effects of caffeine include Increased blood pressure, GI irritation, decreased concentration and irregular heartbeat, among others.
If you feel that it is time to wean yourself off of that Cup of Joe here is advice that hardly ever fails. First off, don't stop anything. Stopping = pain for most people. So instead start something. BEFORE you drink your first cup of coffee drink one large 16 ounce glass of green juice. That could include barley grass, celery-cucumber juice or even something like Pure Synergy. Do this for a few weeks out of shear discipline and then notice how your body naturally gravitates away from coffee and eventually despises it. The alkalinity in the green juice creates an environment in your cells where they begin to notice what true energy and fake energy looks like.
