Coconut butter has been used as a food and a medicine since the dawn of history. Ayurveda (the medicine of India) has long advocated its therapeutic and cosmetic properties.

Unlike the cooked, clogging, cholesterol-soaked, saturated animal fats found in meats and dairy products, coconut butter is a raw saturated fat containing mostly medium-chain fatty acids which the body can metabolize efficiently and convert to energy quickly. Coconut butter contains no cholesterol and does not elevate bad (LDL) cholesterol levels. By weight, Coconut butter has less calories than any other fat source.

Thanks for this post. I just purchased my first coconut oil. What is the best way to use it? I make fruit smoothies for breakfast. A friend told me I should put some evoo in the smoothie. Would that be a good or bad thing? Thanks.

I like hearing the benefits of such things like coconut oil and everything...and it's nice knowing that 'experts' like David Wolfe are into it. but at the end of the day, if I eat the stuff and it doesn't make me feel good, I'm not going to eat or believe it's "beneficial". I mean, all kinds of experts will list the benefits of all kinds of cooked foods and at the end of the day I think its false.

Although, again, I'd like to see some studies that back up these fantastic claims (I want to belive them!), I knew I could immediately refute the notion that coconut oil/butter "is lower in calories than any other fat". So, I did a quick comparative analysis of fats in my apartment (based on the nutrition labels on the back):
- ghee (clarified butter): 135 calories/Tablespoon
- canola oil: 120 c/T
- extra virgin olive oil: 120 c/T
- toasted sesame oil: 120 c/T
- organic unrefined expeller-pressed coconut oil: 120 c/T

That said, coconut oil is pretty tasty & smells great.

A few comments on coconut oil.

Coconut oil is actually lower in fat than most oils.
To the poster above, check the actual amount in grams or ml's of fat of oil. Coconut oil is mostly comprised of MCT's (Medium Chain Tryglycerides) which are close to 8 calories per gram of fat rather than the normal 9 in ordinary fats and oils.

Also, MCT's are rather remarkable in their own right. The body metabolizes them for energy and is MUCH less likely to store them as body fat. For this reason, they are also a good source of energy for the body as they are more bioavailable for energy conversion.

I would like to know more about coconut oil.How does it help in controlling the weight and fat loss. What I heard is, Coconut oil is not good for health. It is the key factor in heart related diseases. Please clarify.
