ABC's 'Wife Swap' Wants You!

Wifeswaprawfood

Via Raw Food Chef Eric Rivkin:

From the Desk of Casting Director Heather Teta:

I'm a Casting Producer with ABC Television and we're looking to feature fabulous families who follow the raw foods diet - or a similar philosophy - on our upcoming show.  I'd love to talk with families who are passionate about truly living and eating healthy. Has this diet enhanced your quality of life - or influenced your lifestyle and parenting style in other positive ways?  Could another family learn a thing or two by experiencing your lifestyle?

We want to hear from you!

We're currently casting for ABC's hit family show, Wife Swap! Please don't be confused by the title - Wife Swap is a family show on ABC primetime. The premise is simple: two moms from two very different families get the opportunity to swap lives (but not bedrooms - everyone has their own!) for a week to experience what it's like to live a different lifestyle - and to see what they can teach each other about their own! The goal is for both families to take away something positive from the experiencewhile also teaching each other why their beliefs and philosophies are so important and beneficial.

Again, I think the raw foods movement is a fascinating philosophy that many families may never have heard of - and could possibly benefit from!  I found your information online and thought you would be a great resource - I would greatly appreciate you forwarding my information on to any families who might be interested in sharing their lives with us for a week!

All featured families will receive a $20,000 financial honorarium for their time - and $1000 goes to anyone who refers a family that makes it on the show! We are looking for two parent families with children (between the ages of 5 and 18) who are ready for adventure! I appreciate your assistance in reaching out to these great families and look forward to hearing from you soon!

Yikes!! Be careful with this one! If you have ever seen this show you know that they look to pair up families that are so different they will absolutely hate each other. One "wife" comes off looking like mother of the year, and the other like an escape from the looney bin. They always cry, slam doors, and exclaim, "I hate (surrogate mom's name here)! I like smoking crack with my baby brother--why can't she understand that?" or something equally ridiculous. And the raw mom will have to eat a live puppy or something equally not worth the compensation money. Not that I've seen this show...

Dave

I agree this strikes me as a bad idea. The "Prime Time, Network Watching" public is not ready for Raw yet. My hunch is that whoever is on this show is going to be made to look like a freak and it will set the movement back a good bit- look at the treatment of Raw Food on a progressive show like Sex and the City. The networks are after entertainment value not enlightenment.
The editing on these reality shows is extremely good and can make anyone look like an idiot with any scrap of footage cut the right way. The show could/will easily capitalize on all the 'weird' things we do, providing enormous laughs for the meat and potatoes public and enormous embarrassment for all of us.
People will come to raw in their own time in their own way, let's not try to push it on a, let's face it, extremely closed-minded world through mass media. This will almost surely backfire.
There is a lot of subtlety, education, and commitment to one's health and lifestyle that go along with raw. Most couch potato types watching ABC will not be accepting and ABC knows this. Therefore they can get maximum comedic value from something that is really sacred to all of us.
Furthermore, whatever raw 'wife' gets stuck with the McDonalds family if going to look even more weak and intolerant as she gets sick and pukes everywhere after being forced to eat a Big Mac, thus compounding the stereotype of raw people as emaciated weirdos who can't cope with the real world.
Not a good idea.

I agree with Dave. I changed the way I ate 11 months ago, and although it was not entirely "raw", I stopped eating milk products, meat, cheese, chicken, flour, wheat, sugar, mushrooms and corn. After about three weeks, I felt incredible. I was also drinking a green juice supplement which made me feel balanced and centered. This was just a little bit of discipline, and I lost over 40 pounds (even without exercise). It is not some wierd fad, but a solid natural way to treat your body. More of us could stand to eat this way, and our health would improve, as well as our physiques. Let's encourage the lifestyle, not diminish it.

Don't do it!!!!

Here in the UK they've been trawling for people who AP, Home Ed or eat vegan/raw for years and most of us haven't bitten. Seriously - however well you think you have come out by the time the editing has happened, O.M.G!!

Besides - would you want to leave your kids looking like they will for eons to come?! Its always the kids in these shows who come off worst!

zoe

They came and interviewed me and my husband for the UK wifeswap - because of our website www.purelyraw.com. It wasn't the actual thing, but to see if we were up for it. They really made it sound like they were interested in the food, and said it would be great to "spread the word about raw food!" But then they kept asking us if we'd eat anything non-raw on the show, if the other wife tried to make us to. We said, "No way!" - coz we're both 100% raw, and really full on with it too.
We also told them we wouldn't force anyone else to eat our food. So we think all that put them off us!
They told us that we wouldn't get a single penny for doing it either! Obviously they can't persuade Americans to go on their show for nothing!

Eric Rivkin

I'm sure the producer Heather is aware of the show's issues with morals and shenanigans. She is also entitled to express improved morals and purer intentions, or be a lying devil, we won't know until it happens (in the lessons of Byron Katie). TV is distorted and there is no perfectly controlled utopian media. I suppose that's rawfood pundits write their own books, to control the content of their desires upon the world.

Marching fearlessly into the belly of the beast to change it for the better, does, in my opinion, result in something good at the very least - increased awareness. Its still an unprecedented opportunity to expose rawfoods to millions. Juliano and rawfoods was mocked on 48 Hours. Rawfoods gets mocked in the print media constantly, and it will never end. Once in a while there's an all-positive media piece on rawfoods. I was fortunate to be the subject of one such piece in a local magazine. I understand the commenters fears, I've felt many myself. Do we plow ahead anyway? Of course. Next time we can do better rather than wait for "safer" turf. Some rawfooders prefer safer turf, and others feel like reckless warriors, and everybody in between exists. That variety in personality is a given.

Everything happens for good reasons, even if rawfoods gets criticized in the piece and its full of doubters. People will become more aware of what they're eating in the end. Inquiry is a key step to wisdom. Increasing awareness and beginning to live in love and trust instead of fear and doubt is where we all started and where billions of others will start as well.

Even pain is good in your body because then you know where the problem is and examine what to do about it. Pain is a messenger of information we need to know. The name wifeswap is painful, the show's past history is painful. Unless someone with true Light goes in and lights up their darkness, change for the better happens much later than sooner.

If this show is going to happen anyway, I feel we may as well pray for the selected rawfood family with Light and strength to enlighten the world with the rawfood influence, and pray for the producers of the show to be respectful.

I want people who are influential in our society to "get it", the root reason is I want to manifest Garden of Eden on earth just like many other millions. So I fearlessly go where I'm invited right to the top echelons of our society to affect positive change. Why not. Its FUN.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I'm a Casting Producer with ABC Television and we're looking for unique, dynamic, outgoing families who participate in the vampire culture! We want to speak with families who are involved in many different ways, whether it be serving as heads of vampire communities, running vampire websites, owning a specialty shop, leading vampire tours, or just collecting vampire memorabilia. We think your culture is fascinating and would love to learn more about your every day lives!

We’re currently casting these great families for ABC’s hit family show, Wife Swap. Please don’t be confused by the title – Wife Swap is a family show on ABC primetime. The premise is simple: two moms from two very different families get the opportunity to swap lives (but not bedrooms!) for a week to experience what it’s like to live a different lifestyle – and to see what they can teach each other about their own! In this case we’re looking to feature families interested and involved in the vampire culture. It’s a unique lifestyle that most people know NOTHING about and we feel that this could be a fun way to introduce another family – and our viewing public - to your philosophy. I found your information online through a vampire related website and thought you might be a great resource. I would greatly appreciate you forwarding my information on to any of your colleagues, friends, and family members who might be interested in sharing their lives with us for a week!

All featured families will receive a $20,000 financial honorarium for their time commitment – and $1000 goes to anyone who refers a family that makes it on the show! We are looking for two parent families with children (between the ages of 5 and 18) who are ready for adventure! I appreciate your assistance in reaching out to these great families and look forward to hearing from you soon!

Best Regards,

Heather Teta

I'm just so proud of the company Heather sees us in. I can't wait to be enlightened about the subtleties of Vampire Culture. Just hope the raw vegans don't get stuck swapping wives with Elvira. With all the blood-sucking, I just don't know how they'll be able to stay vegan- or does cannibalism not count? Maybe they could just suck and spit it out like they do at wine tastings.
Either way, I'm sure there will be much more public acceptance of Vampire Culture after the airing of this episode.

Do we really think being on this show will do us any good as a movement?

Sorry to be snide, but I feel very strongly about this. And I'm sure if you asked Byron Katie to be on Wife Swap, she would graciously decline too. It's one thing to love what is, it's another thing to get in bed with it.

raww living foods reality TV

Dear Friends,

There is an email that is being circulated about having raw food families appear on a reality based television show. Many people are unaware of the possible negative consequences that accompany such an offer.

Three months ago a TV company from New York called me several times and asked for the addresses of raw families in the US. They promised $2,000 to me if I help them find one and $20,000 to the participating family. I replied to them that while there were probably hundreds of raw families in this country it was unlikely that any raw family would want to be exposed. Now, as the word is out, I am concerned for some raw families who might agree to participate for the sake of money.

Just last weekend I was in Eugene and met my friend Nancy B., whose ex-husband (a former raw foodist) is suing her for "improperly" feeding her two boys (ages 7 years and 2 years). Both boys have developed well according to their doctor but she is afraid to live at home and is living in her van.

It is not just a fear, it is a reality. Raw food is not officially recognized yet. Since 2005 my family has been financially and psychologically supporting five different families whose children were attempted to be taken (or were taken) away by authorities. If similar children will get exposed, there will be some viewers out of millions that would want to help “poor” children to be fed “properly.” Especially if professional TV producers will get kids to talk. Children are often naïve and they can say things like, “Yeah, I also like pizza but my parents never allow me to eat it!” For years, my kids were questioned about their diet by many strangers on the street. We were able to escape by constantly moving.

I strongly believe that to expose the benefits of the raw food diet, adults have to act first without involving children, and this process is already happening. When it will become more normal and acceptable to be on a raw diet among adults then we can expose our kids.

Sincerely,
Victoria

Hey readers. Really appreciate everyone voicing their thoughts here. It's the reason the blog exists in the first place.

I asked Heather Teta, the casting producer, to address some of the points above so I can post her thoughts on the website too. She happily agreed and said she'll email me later today.

I'll also include my two cents, for what's its worth then.

Much love,
Dhru

Dave

Curious if you've heard back from Heather.

The show Jan 22, 2007 was great!

Hi Raw'n friends,

I have read a few of the fascinating perspectives on this page. And, I am reminded that no matter what the un-rested world is up to at the not always so seemingly magical moment, best to come from Love.

So what if the show is 'out to get someone'. Who cares what someone else's agenda is our isn't. All I really know is my highest intention.

Within the flicker of an enzyme enacting ... we raise our vibration. There will always be 'cause and effect'. As long as we are effective at getting our message out there ...

My son was apprehended by MCFD at the age of 8! We live in beautiful B.C. - in sunny Vancouver. It took me 7 months to get my son out of the gay foster home, where he was forced to eat Burger King, on a daily basis. He gained 10 pounds on his slight frame and was going to die ... He is my hero!

I am so proud of what I overcame. My website - www.SupernaturalWoman.com was how the authorities snagged 'incriminating' pics. Someone even phoned into Zenith123 child protection to alert them that I was breastfeeding my child. This anonymous coward was none other than a fellow raw student from www.rawtemple.com, where Kaelin and I completed our raw degree. What are rawstruck friends for?

No one in the raw community ( is there such a thing? ) came to our aid. I even contacted a famous female revered in the raw world for her expertise. Nothing. Not even www.rawbc.org.

So, who's afraid of the big, bad red-meat eating wolves? Not I. Not my son.

See you on the show.

Rawsome Returns,

Katherine Marion - Blessed Mother to Kaelin

P.S.

Interesting, isn't it. How raw foodies could be so lacking in clarity and virtually unconscious, as they lay in lies, virtually transfixed in fear. In the flesh ... Just goes to deliciously show you that it takes a lot more than what goes in your mouth to change a crazy mind!
