Better Sleep Part 1 - Dehydration
If you've been integrating a good amount of raw food into your diet for more than 3 weeks, you've most likely felt the benefits of a better night's rest. That could including sleeping less, having a deeper sleep with less tossing, and or waking up feeling ready for a fantastic day.
After the raw honeymoon though, it is quite common for raw foodies to notice the sleep benefits plateau or even regress. The cleaner your body gets the more aware/sensitive it becomes of external factors. To keep up with the internal healing of your body it is important to out grow old habits that maybe holding you back from having a deeper sleep and healthier day.
In a 4 part post, I'm going to cover the most common reasons why raw foodies still may not be hitting that sleep sweet spot and what they can do to turn it around. Feel free to post your questions in the comment section.
Part 1: Dehydration
The Challenge: Most people are quite dehydrated, but because they've never been super-hydrated they have no idea just how dehydrated they really are. I would even go as far as saying that most raw foodies are just "less dehydrated" than the average person. Sure raw fruits and vegetables contain tons of water, but that doesn't mean that you body doesn't crave direct H2O consumption. How does this effect your sleep? The more dehydrated you are the harder it is for your body to recharge and detoxify. The longer it takes for your body to detoxify the more sleep and energy your body requires.
The Solution: So here's the thing - you'll never know how dehydrated you really unless you get super-hydrated. For non-active adults and youth that means 1 Liter of water per 45 pounds of body weight. And for active adults and youth that means 1.5 Liters of water per 45 pounds of body weight.
I usually have at least two of my liters of water with some type of green powder, lemon and a pinch of sea salt.
This practice is just to get you started so you can begin to notice a difference. Again, you'll never know how dehydrated you are unless you have something to compare it with. If you don't notice a difference, hey, maybe you are one of the lucky ones out there that is H2O certified.
After experimenting with super-hydration for at least 1 week, let your body begin to guide you as to how much water it needs. Even though I've been keeping it raw for 6 years now, I can honestly say that I was quite dehydrated for the first 3 years. But it wasn't until I experimented with super-hydration that I noticed a difference. I finally had a direct experience that could help me compare and contrast.
