Sensitivity Paradox?

After I updated my twitter account that my throat was sore from hanging out a hookah spot, a friend asked me an very interesting question:

Hey Dhru, I saw your twitter update about your throat. Sorry to hear and hope you feel better! Do you find now that you are eating raw food that you are more sensitive to things in a bad way? Like, I don't smoke hookah, but if I go to a place that has hookah, it doesn't effect me. My throat is fine and besides the fact that my hair smells, everything else is okay. I like the idea of raw food, but do you find that it makes you TOO sensitive to things?

Yes, eating a raw food diet and detoxing your body will absolutely make you more sensitive to things. But here's what my friend was missing.

Most people don't realize that they actually feel like shit on a day-to-day basis. Most people think that "being healthy" simply means one isn't sick. But because they've never had a true taste health, they can't compare their shitty-ness to a standard. They can't feel how much energy their body wastes on digestion. They can't feel how tired they still are after 8 hours of sleep. And they definitely can't feel how dehydrated and over-worked their organs are.

So yes. I am super sensitive to things like second hand smoke, alcohol (raw wine too) and even negative energy. BUT, along with that sensitivity comes the power to feel soooo incredibly good every hour of every day.

The cleaner your body gets the more sensitive you become to internal and external environments. The more sensitive you become, the more likely it is that you'll have to continually increase your standards. Standards of where you spend time, who you hang out with and of course, what you eat.

My friend saw this as a paradox. I see it for what it really is, the blessing of true health.

Just think, people are walking around feeling like crap and because their body is so use to it they have no idea how much continual damage they are doing to their health. It isn't until you place yourself into a new environment that you can actually take a step back and gain perspective.

Is it tough work? Hell ya. But nobody said you can't enjoy the ride!

Kibbles = Big Mac for Pets

After the recent pet food scandal more pet owners are discovering the transformational benefits of raw food for the four legged friends. And to say that the pet food industry is scurd is an understatement.

For newbies who aren't familiar with the concept of pets eating raw, I highly recommending reading the following article. It gives a great overview about why pet food matters, why raw food works, what the industry feels, real testimonials and place to go to get more information.

"Eating kibbles is like eating a Big Mac daily," says the Riverside resident. For Mr. Journey, her 4-year-old Irish wolfhound, she buys meat at Albertson's, ethnic markets, Elwell's Farm in Santa Ana and the SoCal BARF Co-op.

Mr. Journey, says Temple, is healthy and thriving. She and others who raise dogs on a BARF diet report shiny coats, gleaming teeth, sweet breath and smaller, odorless stools because their bodies absorb more of what they consume.

Uganda's Mircle Man

Dhru's Note: I'm always fascinated by stories of individuals in 'under-developed' countries that are spreading the message of true health. And this story, by far, is one of the best I've seen to date.

Drdavidssali_4 Dr. David Ssali, an herbalist in Kampala, Uganda, is leading a health revolution with a simple but powerful manta:

"About 85 percent deaths are due to accumulation of toxins in the body. The best way to rid ourselves of ill health is to keep our bodies waste-free at all times,"

Using a combination of local herbs and raw food, this doctor is helping patients get rid of everything from enlarged prostates to 5.5 lb tumors. And, although his methods can seem backwards to the local population, who often look up to western medicine as the standard, there's no denying that Ssali is getting outstanding results.

"Ssali instead recommended herbal medicine to clear Buyondo’s colon (large intestine) then ordered him to sleep with a clove of garlic inserted into the anus everyday. “After about 40 days, the problem was gone. I never had to go for the operation,” beams Buyondo."

Dr. Ssali got his start in traditional medicine studying at Nairobi University, but quickly learned that "modern" medicines don't really work as advertised. Disappointed, Ssali turned to herbal medicine and whole foods. He educated himself by talking to elders in the community and by reading as much as possible. What that also means is Ssali walks the talk:

"I don’t eat after 6p.m. and I rarely eat cooked food because it is only a burden for my body to digest yet it provides so little nutrient,” he explains. He also says he prefers to eat what the cow eats instead of eating the cow itself.

Raw Food Restaurants in America

We've updated Give it To Me Raw with a master map of Raw Food Restaurants in America. As of our last count, this list includes 124 raw spots. Boo yeah!

This US map isn't perfect (it runs a little slow), so we'll def need your help to point out flaws and missing locations. And, to be honest, the real reason we launched this map so quickly was because we were having a hard time finding + remembering raw food locations when we traveled.

Also, know that we're not stopping here. Our strategy moving forward will be to continue the work on the dynamic user generated version of Give It To Me Raw. This will include the ability for anyone to add a location or review. It will also include detailed information on restaurants like menu, photos and some other good stuff. When will it launch? When it is ready of course!

Thanks for everyone's continued support, especially all the folk who have emailed us with corrections.
