Tools: Simple Lemon Juicer

Lemonjuicer

Update: A few WLIR readers were kind enough to school me and let me know that is device is called a "Lemon Reamer", (I should have run this post by Sarma). Reader Elle also noted that a wooden reamer is far superior to a plastic or metal one. There you go!

I use a lot of citrus. I use it in everything from my energized water to my daily dressing to my summer ginger limeade. If a good amount of your diet is raw friendly, chances are you use a lot of citrus too.

Back-in-the-day I would squeeze lemons/limes by hand and I can't tell you how much time that would take. Then one day my mom gave me a simple tool to make my life easier - a lemon juicer (I was 19 when I started eating raw). Most of the lemon juicers that I've had have been plastic (from Ikea), but I'm on the look-out for a good metal one wooden one. There are all sorts of complex citrus juicers you can get, but from my experience a simple one will do just fine - especially if you already have a juicer.

Are you certain that citrus juice and metal are a good mix? I think fruit juice tends to pick up metal or metal flavors.

One of the things that stopped me from eating cooked jellys was that the metallic taste picked up from whatever it was cooked in became intolerable. It felt really toxic. Same thing with tofu, back when I ate soy. This may only be true with commerical aluminum pans, but I stay away from metal as much as possible, except for the blender, etc...Also, I've heard, but don't know for sure, that metal robs vitamin C from whatever it touches...All of the above lends credence to the ceramic craze.

It lookd like a butt plug...

Looks safer and more efficient than the knife/fork juicing I've been doing...

Usually these are called "lemon reamers" - they are fantastic. I'm amazed this is new to some people - I can't imagine not using one!! It get's out so much juice.

The best I've found are the wooden ones. I bought a good quality wooden one and have been using it daily for 5 years or so and it's still looks brand new. Plastic or metal with acid is generally not a good idea.
