What inspired you to create your business?

The business aspect of what I do came unexpectedly from a lifelong desire to contribute something to humanity. I've always known there was something I was passionate to share, but didn't know what it was until discovering how miraculous it is on every level to get back to nature with the way we eat.

It started with my initial 30 days raw experiment on myself, which I documented in my independent film, "Supercharge Me! 30 Days Raw." From that time, I've been eager to share what I learned during that 30 days with everyone on the planet. But this venture is really more like a non-profit than a business. I've invested a fortune in it because I know it's the reason I'm here on the planet. I may not be around tomorrow and that's o.k. as long as I know I was on my path today.

What was the inspiration for your movie Supercharge Me? Will you be doing any more?

I was very inspired by Morgan Spurlock's film, "Super Size Me." And I was waiting for him to do a follow-up film, showing how he detoxed from fast food. A year later, I saw two friends transform after doing raw food cleanses. I had just been through a difficult time after losing my grandmother, and I thought it would be a good idea to go to a retreat for a few weeks to recover. So I booked a raw food retreat for myself. About a week before going, it hit me like a flash that I should document the experience to provide an extreme dietary contrast to "Super Size Me." I'd been working with a small crew on some short film projects, so I got them on board and we went to work.

There is a possibility of another film project. There are certainly plenty of ideas. But I told myself I'd have to at least break even on "Supercharge Me!" before embarking on another film. And I only need to sell 14,000 more DVDs to break even!

The money aspect of this is my least favorite part. I would much prefer if it were not an issue and I could just devote my time and energy to sharing freely. It's what I love to do.

What are you up to these days?

I've been doing a variety of things lately. I consulted with a top burger joint to add two vegan and gluten-free items to their menu. I took a group of elementary school teachers and principal through a 30-day raw challenge. I did a keynote presentation on eating plants at the world-renowned Selby Botanical Gardens for their annual Plant & Garden Festival. I do healthy food demonstrations for elementary schools.

And I speak at universities, which I love.I'm also working on wider distribution of my film. I believe it really helps people. And I'll be picking up my daily apple project again soon; coming up with a new idea for the apple for every day of the year. And gotta finish that book. I love it all!

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

In addition to my Dharma work, I've been getting more into my yoga practice and have taken up Capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian martial art. It's quite intense and a lot of fun. I like the strength I'm gaining from it.

At this stage of my life, I'm making family a priority and seeing tremendous benefits in deepening those relationships. Indeed, I believe this is ancestral work we're doing together. It's very powerful to heal what needs healing.

What's the best way for a raw newbie to get into raw or vegan foods?

It depends on the person. Some people can dive right in. Others need to ease in gradually. I'd say most people are the "ease in" type. So, just starting the day off with a green smoothie (thanks to Victoria Boutenko) is a great start. And then adding in more fresh foods throughout the day. For those who are able, another approach would be to start with a green juice fast/feast to break some food habits in the first week or two and then transition into raw food. It helps a lot to have some quick, easy and delicious recipes under your belt and then keep adding to them.

Can you share with us a favorite recipe or dish?

I love my raw Pasta Buddhanesca!

There's a link to the recipe here:

How is your spiritual life in conjunction with the raw foods lifestyle? How does it all relate for you?

My spiritual life is inspired or uninspired by my food choices. When I eat close to nature, I can almost hear the angels singing.

How do you come up with recipes?

I've learned to come up with recipes based on what's around. It's certainly the most practical approach. And it's made me very creative in the kitchen. In the beginning, I got a lot of guidance from the raw recipe books out there.

What's one thing that most people don't know about you?

Nobody knows the trouble I've seen. :) Seriously, I think I may come across as someone who has had it easy. It couldn't be further from the truth. I've encountered major challenges throughout my life but I've maintained a positive attitude. I've come to be grateful for the adversity I've experienced. It has deepened my faith and allowed me to take full responsibility for my life.

Do you think it's vital to be 100% raw or 100% vegan?

I do know I feel my best when I'm 100% raw and vegan. I don't see the benefit of doing anything else, other than for emotional numbing. I used to go to cheese for its morphine comfort. And a bowl of brown rice will numb my emotions, too. When you don't have the ability to numb yourself, you have to face emotions that come up, which is for the best ultimately. But sometimes we're not ready and those foods put a pause button on the rising up of emotions we'd rather not face.

IF you were to eat any cooked food you wanted what would you eat?

I do sometimes eat cooked food, but I usually feel hungover afterward. I love the ethnic flavors of Ethiopian, Indian, Mediterranean and Thai foods. And I keep it vegan.

What raw principles do you personally embrace?

Fresh is best.

What is your typical day like and what would you eat?

I haven't yet had a typical day. Each day is different. I love to start the day with water, then fresh fruits, green juices, green smoothies, yummy salads, snacking on nuts, seeds or seaweed. Sometimes, I make little decadent raw treats.

Have you experienced any deficiencies on the raw food diet?

I am not aware of any deficiencies, other than the need for me to supplement iron and B12. That's a small price to pay for all the benefits I'm getting. I'm certainly getting much more nutrition now than I was as a junk food vegetarian.

What are some raw food staples in your current diet?

Apples, bananas, leafy greens, tomatoes, nuts and seeds

Are you 100% raw?

I'm working my way back to all raw because it's how I feel my best.

Do you ever get sick?

I never get sick when I'm eating all raw.

What is the last book you read?

Jitterbug Perfume, by Tom Robbins. What a brilliant and fascinating book! Beets play a role. :)

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

I would be Jenna Apple, spreading love and sweetness all over the world. As Jenna Apple, I'd have the superhero power of being always in love.

If aliens came by, (ya know the aliens that have "never" been to Earth before), what would you feed them first?

Apples! If they didn't have the proper teeth to chew them, I'd make applesauce.
