Raw Foods News Magazine profiles professional driver Jerrod Sessler's journey and explorations in eating raw and reversing his cancer:
In 2000 Jerrod’s doctors delivered the gut-wrenching news that he had stage IV melanoma.
“They told me that I had about a five percent chance of living 10 years," Jerrod says. They told him his treatment options were chemotherapy, radiation, interferon or simple ‘monitoring’. "They said that these treatments or combinations of them would improve my odds up to 15 percent or so,” Jerrod said.
Doctors also warned him that the chemical treatments and radiation made it unlikely that he and his wife would be able to have children.
However Jerrod wasn't planning on settling for that:
Following a period of intense research, discernment, and prayer, Jerrod and his young wife Nikki decided against traditional treatments and opted for radically changing Sessler’s diet.
It took them weeks and month to do an “extreme makeover” of their diet to revamp their habits and their pantry. The result was what they still follow today: a strict vegan diet, mostly raw foods that haven’t been processed, with no dairy or meat.
In the end it all paid off!
Today all Sessler family members are healthy and thriving, including three new additions to the family; two boys and a girl whose ages range from eight months to four years old.
Jerrod is thrilled to have defeated his cancer and happy to continue racing cars, a lifelong passion that started at age four when he announced that he wanted to be a race car driver. He raced go-karts as a boy and raced stock cars professionally in l998.

In an article on pr.com, celebrity talk show host and Daytime Emmy award-winner, Montel Williams, revealed that his raw food / whole food diet has be a key factor in his emotional, mental and physical transformation.
"It's amazing how good I have been feeling."
Montel also commented that his recent dietary shifts have significantly healed his MS.
"I've been able to mitigate a few of the symptoms that I have or at least lessen their severity. I think the more I stay with this and the cleaner I get, the better and better I'll be."
Montel was diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) in 1999 and has since started the The Montel William MS Foundation. The organization is "dedicated to furthering the scientific study of multiple sclerosis."
Montel looks like he maybe writing a book about the entire experience it too! Score one for the veggies!
PR.com: How are you feeling these days… physically, emotionally or otherwise?
Montel Williams: I guess that is in reference to the fact that most of your readers will know, of course I have MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and I've been dealing with this for about seven years. It is an everyday struggle. Every single day I am aware of the fact that I have this illness. But, I've said this since day one, and now it seems to become the new battle cry, "I have MS. MS does not have me." And it's not going to. I exercise every day, I stay on top of my diet. I'm in the process of 'guinea-pigging' myself now for a new book I 'm about to write, about food. You truly are what you eat. I've now been on a six month eating regimen with two different chefs, that has been whole food and raw food chefs, who have been preparing food for me every single day. I'm going to make it simple so that anybody else can do the same thing. It's amazing how good I have been feeling. I've been able to mitigate a few of the symptoms that I have or at least lessen their severity. I think the more I stay with this and the cleaner I get, the better and better I'll be.

If you read the article that our earlier post, "Raw Food, brought to you by Nexium", linked to, you noticed an interesting commentary by Dr. Jeanne Freeland-Graves of The University of Texas at Austin on enzymes:
She [Dr. Freeland-Graves] and others throw cold water on the common claim that leaving food raw allows its enzymes to take over the work of the body's own digestive enzymes.
"That's just not scientific," says Freeland-Graves.
Enzymes are complex proteins, and when we ingest food, she explains, whole proteins are quickly broken down into their component amino acids — so the body doesn't absorb intact enzymes. If it did, she notes, the immune system would launch an attack.
The enzyme claim by many raw foodists is "completely false," says Graham, noting that "we fight that (notion) at every turn."
Compare this to an article by Dr. Emily Kane ND entitled Raw Food vs Cook Food:
The pancreas is forced to work harder with a cooked food diet. "Although the body can manufacture enzymes, the more you use your enzyme potential, the faster it is going to run out..." wrote Dr. Edward Howell, who pioneered research in the benefits of food enzymes. A youth of 18 may produce amylase levels 30 times greater than those of an 85 year old person.
Enzymes are what make seeds sprout. Sprouts are, in fact, one of the richest sources of enzymes. Other excellent sources are papaya, pineapple and the aspergillus plant. Science cannot duplicate enzymes, because they are the stuff of life itself. Only raw food has functional "live" enzymes. Therefore the liver, pancreas, stomach and intestines must come to the rescue and furnish the requisite digestive enzymes to the individual nourished solely on a cooked food diet.
So who's information is out-of-whack? Or are we talking apples and oranges here? Can we get some help from our Doctor buddies out there? Let's see if David Wolfe and Dr. Gabriel Cousens can clear this up.
Regardless of definitions, the bottom line is that it takes less overall energy to digest raw food. And raw food, for a fact, has more of just about everything than cooked food. If you want to suffer less when you eat your cooked food (especially if you've been eating mostly raw for a good amount of time), be sure to take your enzymes, (we've heard good things about Vitalzym but don't trust us, ask around).

Cancer is not a disease caused by some virus from afar - it is actually a naturally accruing event. Meaning, it is the bodies reaction to to a toxic internal environment. Toxicity caused by food, emotions and environment. Remove the toxicity and the mutated cancerous cells can actually reverse back to regular health cells.
Knowing this, it makes complete sense how Earl Chong reversed his prostate cancer with the assistance of spirituality and food, (via Jamaica Gleaner News).
Jamaican Earl Chong will be 66 on his next birthday in 2006. But, according to the records of doctors both here and in Miami, he should have been dead long ago. He should have died and been buried twelve years ago.
The death certificate for this man was all but written in 1994 when he was diagnosed with cancer of the throat and then cancer of the prostate at age 53.
One year before Chong received this appalling diagnosis, another man, 53-year-old Earl Findlay also woke up to the realisation that his life was at risk.
This man was 280 pounds and heading for a heart attack, he felt.
Findlay and Chong both would have almost certainly been dead today, they say, had they not experienced the miracle that changing their diet could bring.
According to Chong, god healed him from cancer and also directed him to radically change his diet after an initial juice fast which left him a new man.
Findlay himself made the decision to become a vegetarian and, since doing so, has become a convert of Earl Chong who is the owner of Earl's Juice Garden restaurants and health food stores in Kingston.
On the day we visited the Juice Garden on Derrymore Road, Earl Findlay had his favourite lunch of steamed lettuce, seaweed and bulgar. For breakfast, he said, he had a 'raw' meal of split peas in Soya milk, mixed with flaxseed and oats.
According to Findlay, dinner would be couscous, bulgar and steamed lettuce, with some tofu in garlic sauce. Added to this diet was the 16 ounces of 'green juice' which he has everyday.

Readers of this blog include health newbies, full-fledged enthusiasts, and everything in between. So it totally makes sense that I've gotten some feedback that it would be nice for WLIR to cover some of the basics every once in a while.
I thought this would be a great start: What exactly happens when you eat cooked foods? Short answer, your body responds as if it was under attack!
Leukocytosis and Cooked Food (by Wes Petereson via mercola.com)
In 1930, research was conducted at the Institute of Clinical Chemistry in Lausanne, Switzerland, under the direction of Dr. Paul Kouchakoff. The effect of food (cooked/processed vs. raw/natural) on the immune system was tested and documented.
Dr. Kouchakoff's discovery concerned the leukocytes, the white blood cells.
It was found that after a person eats cooked food, his/her blood responds immediately by increasing the number of white blood cells. This is a well-known phenomena called "digestive leukocytosis", which means that there is a rise in the number of leukocytes, or white blood cells, after eating.
Since digestive leukocytosis was always observed after eating, it was considered to be a normal physiological response to eating. No one knew why the number of white cells would rise after eating, since this appeared to be a stress response, as if the body was reacting to something harmful, such as infection, trauma, or exposure to toxic chemicals.
Back in 1930, Swiss researchers of the institute of Chemical Chemistry studied the influence of food on human blood and made a remarkable discovery. They found that eating unaltered, raw food or food heated at low temperatures did not cause a reaction in the blood. In addition, if a food had been heated beyond a certain temperature (unique to each food), or if the food was processed (refined, added chemicals, etc.), this always caused a rise in the number of white cells in the blood.

Most "Health Care" in the United States is actually "Sick Care". That's why most of the nearly 2 trillion dollars spent on "Health Care" every year is spent in the last 60 days of an individuals life. Of the remaining money, very little of that is spent on preventive measures.
If you've been diagnosed with a terminal disease and you want fear, lack of hope, and mis-education - stick with the status quote. Continue reading US News to find the best hospitals in your area, continue learning about the latest and greatest medical procedures from your Nightly News, and continue making bankruptcy plans.
If you are looking for options though, options of hope, abundance, health, understanding & true wellness, think outside the system.
For some individuals that includes self healing, for others, it may require further support. If you are looking for deeper and complete support there are true Health Care centers that can accomidate. One of the highest recomended centers is the Sonaviv Medical Institute (intro video).

Candida, for most Americans, is not part of the daily vernacular; for raw-foodies, not so. Thanks to work by early raw-food authors, Candida and its effects have been given much attention.
When it comes to the cause of Candida however, specifically related to diet, the confusion is still prominent.
For those new to the subject, let us first address the basics.
What is Candida?
Candida is a yeast in the body. The most known form of Candida is Candida albicans, which is a mold/yeast. Everyone has some levels of candida in their system, however it only becomes a challenge when the Candida proliferates uncontrollably.
How does it effect me?
The effects of Candida are not very well understood by our health care system. That often leads to a misdiagnoses of Candia as the following:
